The U-Pass is a special transit pass that provides full-time students with unlimited access to HRM’s Metro Transit for the academic year, from September through April. Additionally, students who are registered for summer courses will be eligible for unlimited access to HRM's Metro Transit for the summer months, May-August.
Who is eligible?
It is mandatory for all full-time students during the regular academic year. Part-time students are not eligible for this service during this time. There is no opt-in or opt-out for this program.
During the summer months, both full-time and part-time students are eligible for this service. If you are a full-time student during the summer, there is no opt-out option. However, if you are a part-time student, you must opt-in to the program at the Service Centre to receive your U-Pass.
How much does it cost?
All full-time students registered in three or more on-campus courses per semester will be charged a mandatory $146.00 U-Pass fee. Students who are registered in fewer than three courses in the fall semester but are registered in three courses in the winter semester will be charged $72.50 for the U-Pass from January to April. Students commencing their studies at Saint Mary’s University registered in three or more on-campus courses for the winter semester will also be charged the $72.50 rate. The charge of the U-Pass during the summer months is $75.00. This will be automatically charged onto your student account if you are a full-time student. If you are taking part-time classes during the summer, you must opt-in to the program and pay the $75.00 fee at the time of opt-in at the Service Centre.
Where do I obtain my U-Pass?
Your U-Pass sticker is available the day that the Service Expo begins. During the time that the Service Expo is open, you will pick up your U-Pass sticker there. Once the Service Expo ends, you can pick up your U-Pass at the Information Desk, located in the lobby of the Student Centre. Simply show your validated student ID and if you are a full-time student, our staff will provide you with a U-Pass. During the summer months, you can pick up your U-Pass at the front desk of SMUSA, located on the 5th floor of the Student Centre.
No student ID? Pick one up at the Services Plus desk in the Patrick Power Library. You need your student ID to Receive a U-Pass.
Student ID lost, stolen or destroyed?
To replace your student ID there is a $15.00 administration charge payable at the Circulation Services Desk located in the Patrick Power Library. An additional $25.00 administration charge for a first loss of U-Pass. An additional $50.00 replacement fee for second loss and an additional $100.00 for third loss of U-Pass. You can receive this replacement and make your payment of the replacement U-Pass sticker at the SMUSA office on the 5th floor of the Student Centre.
Bus schedules and route maps are located at the Information Desk in the Student Centre and on information posts at campus bus stops. For further transit schedule and route information, please call the HRM Call Centre at (902) 490-4000 between 7:30 a.m. and 10 p.m., seven days a week. Or to find out when the next two buses depart any stop, dial 480 plus the four digit telephone number displayed on your nearest bus stop sign.
Appropriate use of your U-Pass
Your U-Pass cannot be loaned, sold or otherwise transferred in any manner to any other person. Metro Transit will confiscate U-Passes which are not used specifically by the student whose picture appears on the ID card. If a Metro Transit bus driver has confiscated your U-Pass card, please contact the General Manager of SMUSA on the 5th floor of the Student Centre at (902) 496-8702.
Students with Disabilities
Saint Mary’s University students with disabilities who use Access-A-Bus are eligible to use this program.
