The Equity Centre is responsible for fostering an equitable environment for Saint Mary’s students through projects and research aimed at identifying and addressing issues impacting our community. Within the Saint Mary’s community, each one of us is responsible for working to ensure we are all able to enjoy the same high level of access and well-being.
The Student Equity Officer works to foster a sense of belonging and community among all Saint Mary's students and serve as an advocate for equity-seeking groups. Students can come to the Equity Centre for information about equity-seeking groups, campus resources, support personnel, coping strategies, and more.
The Student Equity Officer also conducts research and education projects. Their mandate is to conduct research by interacting directly with students in order to reveal student attitudes towards different issues facing equity-seeking groups. By conducting interviews, administering surveys, and hosting dialogues to try and measure how students perceive different social issues as well as how students are currently responding to these problems. Education projects are aimed at promoting awareness and positive responses to these problems. Which projects are adopted for the given academic year depends on feedback gathered from students, as well as the overall vision of the Student Equity Officer, SMUSA and the University.
You are always welcome to drop in the Equity Centre during office hours or e-mail to make an appointment.
