OUR EXECUTIVE TEAM

Shiray Tan

President & CEO

University is a magical phase in our lives, and most of us only get to experience it for a few years. As the SMUSA president, I am committed to making these precious years the best they can be for you.

As the official representative and primary spokesperson for SMU's student body, I am responsible for the Association's overall success and welfare, as well as overseeing its daily operations. It is my duty to advocate for SMUSA's best interests and prioritize the well-being of its members.

But beyond my role as president, I'm just like any other student. I care about making new friends, fitting in, having fun, learning as much as I can, and creating lifelong memories. So, please feel free to approach me whenever you see me. I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback on how we can improve the university experience for everyone, but more importantly, I would love to be your friend. It is truly remarkable that we could be anywhere, doing anything else at this very moment, but we are here together. Shiray Tan at your service, Huskies!

Anubhav Gupta

Vice President - Advocacy

As a fourth-year student, I know how invaluable these years at Saint Mary's University are and how quickly they fly by. Through my experiences, I can also understand that this journey may have its ups and downs, and every problem we face seems critical. As your VP Advocacy, it is my honour to be there to hear your concerns and support you in any way possible.

Through my role, I advocate on behalf of students to municipal, provincial, and federal governments. I also represent the student voice on the SMU Board of Governors, and advocate for students on both the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) and Students Nova Scotia (SNS).

It is my goal to work with all of you to champion for greater rights for SMU students. Feel free to stop by for a chat in my office, schedule a meeting virtually, or approach me anywhere you see me on campus to raise your concerns, tell me about your day, or anything that interests you. Always remember that I'm never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna run around and desert you.

Rilla Barrett

Vice President - Academic

I’m a 5th year student in the bachelor of commerce, majoring in HR. I grew up just outside the city, and did three years at CBU before transferring to SMU in the Fall of 2022. I’m excited to be back in Halifax and to work with SMUSA this year! In my spare time, I love to try new restaurants and coffee shops in the city with friends.

In my position I provide support for students dealing with academic concerns and grievances. Some of the things I handle include academic integrity issues, concerns about classes, and assisting students with appeal processes. I also represent students on several university committees and Academic Senate.

As a transfer student, I know it can be challenging transitioning to a new university. This year, I want to work on making the transition smoother for new students so I’d love to hear from you if you have any ideas on how the academic experience can be improved. If you want to chat or need support, my door and inbox are always open!

Amy Wilson

Vice President - Events & Engagement

I'm Amy, a vibrant force here at SMUSA. When I'm not studying criminology and psychology, you'll find me strumming my guitar, giving tours of the university, or working out at the gym. I bring this passion for music, and art to every event I plan, ensuring a fun and inclusive atmosphere where students can let loose and have an unforgettable time. Join me in creating incredible memories and embracing the joy of shared experiences at Saint Mary’s.

As the Vice President of Events and Engagement, my primary goal is to create fun, safe, and engaging environments where all students feel included. I want every student to know that the events we craft are specifically designed for them, providing a space where they can have a truly enjoyable time. By fostering a vibrant and exciting atmosphere, my aim is to bring a sense of fun and belonging to every student at SMU.

Amaan Ahmed

Vice President - Marketing & Communications

I am a 4th year student majoring in Computing Science. In my spare time, I like to go hiking, make content for social media, and go on road trips with my friends.

As the VP Marketing and Communications, it is my responsibility to manage the website and other social media channels so that news, updates, and events are shared. I will collaborate with the SMUSA team and many other individuals on campus on communication issues as well as on external affairs to get sponsors for significant events like Welcome Weeks.

With a creative and strategic mindset, I'm committed to making a lasting impact during my term. My passion for elevating the voice of the student body and ensuring that each student feels heard and represented is unwavering.

I'm eager to collaborate with the students of Saint Mary's University and make this year a successful one!

If you have any questions or ideas you'd like to share, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.
