START A SOCIETY
Step 1: Getting Started
First, gather your ideas for a student society and come up with a name. Outline a distinguished purpose for your society but make sure it does not conflict with SMUSA’s mission and vision statements.
Define and individualize the roles of each executive member (at least four executives including the President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary/or equivalent). Don’t forget to set up formal recurring meetings for your society!
Step 2: Writing a Constitution
When you have all the information mentioned above, it’s time to write your society’s constitution. It is mandatory that every society is governed by a constitution. Click here to download our sample constitution template!
Step 3: Getting Ratified
You’re almost finished! Share your ideas and make a list of at least 20 members to join your society. Now all you need to do is submit a ratification form along with the society constitution you made in step two.
Be sure to read the society handbook for a more detailed checklist and remember that you can always ask us for help!
